Dear Parents,
We use Secret Stories in our classroom to. help us figure out all of those tricky phonics sounds that letters make when they get together in words. Once we know all of the Secrets, we'll be able to read and write almost anything!
Don't be surprised when your child comes home talking about the strange behaviors of the letters! For example, did you know that the letters "au" and "aw" are in love? Yep, it's true! and they get so embarrassed when they have to stand together in words that they always blush and say, "Awwwwwww!" (as in the words: August, awful, and saw). Or, that there are Superhero Vowels with the power to say their names (though they have "short and lazy" disguises, as well!) There's also Mommy E and the Babysitter Vowels.... and even a Sneaky Y! These simple stories make it easy for kids to remember all the crazy sounds that letters make when they get together, so that they can USE them for reading, writing, and spelling!
Be sure to ask your child about the new Secrets they've learned, and if they have trouble reading or spelling a word, ask if they see (or hear) any Secrets in it!
For more information and for free parent resources to help support your child's independent reading and writing at home, go to www.TheSecretStories.com/Learn-More/Free-Phonics-Resources-for-Parents. You can also search for the "Secret Stories Phonics" App in Apple's App Store for more at home reading and writing fun with the Secrets!

**Secret Stories**
These outlaw words are examples of having too few letters actually doing what they should so that we can read them. Readers will be unable to decode them, making them not figure-out-able. Your only bet is to send them to word jail and memorize them.
Parents,
Help your child become a confident and fluent reader by working to memorize the following words. When your child sees the word in a story, sentence, or even on a flashcard, he or she should be able to read the word with ease. We will share a few "off to jail" words with you each week!
could, would, should

We appreciate these amazing community service members for giving our car duty staff the morning off on this rainy morning! They were awesome!

After consultation with the Sheriff’s Office, local EMS, and the TU transportation department, we have made the decision to close school again tomorrow, Friday, January 24. This decision was made out of an abundance of caution for our buses, parent/staff drivers, and our young student drivers who may be driving themselves to school on secondary roads that could be icy and dangerous in the morning after refreezing overnight. As you know, we will always put student and staff safety first when making decisions such as this one. All schools will return to a regular schedule on Monday, January 27. Thank you for your support of Thomaston-Upson Schools!

Due to the probability of icy and hazardous road conditions, particularly on secondary roads, and our safety concerns for students and staff, the Thomaston-Upson School System will be closed on Thursday, January 23.

Due to severe weather and the probability of adverse driving conditions in the morning, all Thomaston-Upson Schools and Central Office will be closed on Wednesday, January 22. We will continue to monitor the weather and will release information about Thursday’s plans as soon as possible.

The TU School System has been monitoring weather reports and gathering the information necessary to make an informed decision about this week’s predicted storms. In order to ensure the safety of students and staff, all Thomaston-Upson Schools and central office will be closed Tuesday, January 21. We will release information about Wednesday’s plans on Tuesday afternoon after assessing the weather situation. Please know that the Thomaston-Upson School System will always put safety first when making decisions that affect our students and staff.

Parents - Please take a moment to complete the Georgia School Climate Survey for ULPS.
Formerly known as the Georgia Student Health Surveys, these surveys provide our school improvement team with valuable data when evaluating our school climate and making decisions for improvement. This survey may take about 10 minutes but we would greatly appreciate your feedback!
