Thomaston-Upson Schools is pleased to welcome Dr. Lavance Brown as the new principal of Upson-Lee Alternative School. A proud graduate of Upson High School, Dr. Brown returns to this leadership role with a wealth of educational experience, a passion for student success, and a deep commitment to serving the community that helped shape him.
Following his graduation from Upson High School, Dr. Brown proudly served in the United States Navy, where he developed the values of service, leadership, and excellence that have guided him throughout his career. He later earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Mercer University, a Master of Education degree from Columbus State University, an Education Specialist (Ed.S.) degree, and a Doctor of Education degree from Argosy University.
Dr. Brown began his career in education as a mathematics teacher at Flynn Middle School in Griffin before joining Atlanta Public Schools. During his time in Atlanta, he taught mathematics and advanced into school leadership, serving as Assistant Principal at both West Fulton Middle School and John F. Kennedy Middle School. His dedication to students, staff, and academic excellence ultimately led to his appointment as Principal of John F. Kennedy Middle School.
Driven by a desire to give back to his hometown, Dr. Brown returned to Thomaston-Upson Schools, where he joined the faculty at Upson-Lee Middle School as a mathematics teacher before transitioning to Upson-Lee Alternative School. Throughout his time in the district, he has remained committed to helping students overcome challenges, achieve academic success, and develop the skills necessary for lifelong growth.
As principal of Upson-Lee Alternative School, Dr. Brown looks forward to building strong relationships with students, families, and staff while fostering a supportive learning environment where every student has the opportunity to succeed.
"Throughout my educational career, I have remained committed to education, leadership, service, and student achievement," Dr. Brown said. "From the classroom to school administration and now serving students in my home community, I am honored to have the opportunity to continue making a positive difference in the lives of young people."
