Dr. Larry Derico, Superintendent of the Thomaston-Upson County School System, has announced his intention to retire, effective June 2026. Derico has served as Superintendent since June 2018. He joined the district office in 2005 after serving as a teacher and assistant principal in both the Meriwether and Thomaston-Upson school systems. At the T-U district office, he served as Director of Federal Programs from 2005-2010, Director of Curriculum and Instruction from 2010-2014, and Assistant Superintendent from 2014-2018.
“It has been the honor of a lifetime to serve as Superintendent of the Thomaston-Upson County School System,” said Derico. “I am deeply grateful to the Thomaston-Upson County Board of Education for placing their trust and confidence in me to lead this system. Their support, guidance, and partnership have meant more to me than words can fully express.”
Dr. Derico also shared his heartfelt appreciation for the people who make up the school system. “I want to sincerely thank our faculty and staff for their unwavering commitment to excellence, our students for inspiring us every day, our parents for their partnership, and the greater Thomaston-Upson community for standing behind our schools. Your support has made this journey incredibly meaningful.”
He acknowledged that the decision to retire was not easy. “My love for the Thomaston-Upson County School System runs deep,” he said. “This important decision was made only after much prayer and reflection. I truly believe this is the right step for me and for my family, even though it is difficult to imagine not being a part of this work on a daily basis.”
Reflecting on his tenure, Dr. Derico expressed both gratitude and pride for all that has been accomplished. “I am extremely proud of the progress we have made over the past seven and a half years - from improvements to our educational and athletic programs and facilities, to gains in student achievement, to strengthening the culture and unity that define us as a district. Most of all, I am proud that we are united as a UL family, working together for the success of our students, our schools, and our community.”
Dr. Derico will continue to serve through June 2026 to ensure a smooth and thoughtful transition. He said, "I remain fully committed to this school system and look forward to the work that awaits us during the final semester of the 2025-26 school year. My focus will remain on supporting our students and staff, advancing our goals, and leaving the Thomaston-Upson School System positioned for continued success. Thomaston-Upson Schools will always hold a special place in my heart.”
Further information regarding leadership transition plans will be shared by the Board of Education at a later date.
